The company says LamiBak Flex is suited for further processing such as coating, metallization, or extrusion across food applications including pouches, sachets, and flow packs. Ahlstrom adds that the new paper maintains a recyclable profile and its design enables reduced primer coating needs.

According to Ahlstrom, LamiBak Flex is made from 100% responsibly sourced wood pulp (FSC and PEFC certified), certified recyclable in the US (WMU-certified) and in Europe (EN 13430 and CEPI protocol standards). The LamiBak range is said to be suitable for composting depending on regional standard.

The paper is also reportedly PFAS-free, features a natural grease barrier and aims to reduce material use by minimizing the need for excessive primer and barrier coatings.

With LamiBak Flex, we address the critical challenge of delivering high-barrier paper for flexible packaging while supporting sustainability goals,” says Guillaume Latourette, Vice President of Ahlstrom’s Global Food Packaging business. “This innovation represents the future of functionalized base paper for converters and brands alike.”

Last year Ahlstrom revealed its LeafSaver specimen collection card designed to store and transport DNA samples from plants, fungi, insects, and parasites at ambient temperatures, apparently reducing the environmental impacts and costs of cold chain transportation. LeafSaver aims to allow researchers to place a specimen directly onto the designated area of a collection paper, then close and seal it once the sample has dried.

At the end of 2024 the company introduced its transparent paper-based tape backing, MasterTape Cristal, made from renewable materials and seeking to reduce plastic waste and environmental impact. The tape can be used for applications including gift wrapping, packaging and office use, offering similar strength and transparency to traditional plastic tape.
