UPM Specialty Papers and Eastman have jointly developed a cutting-edge biopolymer-coated paper solution for food packaging applications that demand strong grease and oxygen barriers. This new packaging integrates Eastman’s biobased, compostable Solus™ performance additives with BioPBS™ polymer to form a recyclable, thin coating on UPM’s sustainable barrier base papers, supporting brands in their shift to eco-friendly packaging.

“This collaboration with Eastman reflects our commitment to advancing fibre-based packaging solutions,” said Esa Saukkonen, Packaging Portfolio Development Manager at UPM R&D. “This biopolymer-coated option is ideal for challenging food items, from confectioneries to chilled foods like meat pies.”

Leveraging the performance-enhancing properties of UPM Solide™ Lucent and UPM Prego™, the new packaging solution offers superior heat sealability and barrier protection—even in folded applications—making it ideal for flexible packaging. Furthermore, the coating layer is so thin that it allows for recycling within existing fibre recycling streams and works with conventional LDPE extrusion coating equipment, eliminating the need for new capital investments.

“This collaboration has enabled us to develop compostable, fibre-based packaging that integrates seamlessly with existing extrusion coating equipment,” said Bhuma Rajagopalan, Marketing Manager, CASE Innovation at Eastman. “Eastman Solus™ additives reduce plastic usage and increase the recyclability of food packaging.”

The solution meets PTS recyclability standards (PTS-RH 021/97 cat II) and is validated for home and industrial compostability, making it a robust choice for sustainable packaging. UPM will showcase samples at PACK EXPO International in Chicago, November 3-6, at Stand W-21110.
