Creating a delectable cookie is a culinary challenge that often involves incorporating butter or some form of grease, making it crucial to design packaging that can withstand potential staining.

With a growing shift towards environmentally friendly packaging, brand owners and retailers are increasingly opting for fibre-based materials over plastic. To meet the demand for sustainable cookie packaging, Walki introduced a fibre-based cookie tray.

To address the unique challenge of preventing staining, Walki collaborated with two key partners: Syntegon, a leading packaging machinery producer, and Billerud, a Swedish board producer.

The collaborative goal was to develop a fibre-based material that outperforms traditional plastic trays in sustainability. The result is the Folded Fibre Tray, a rigid, recyclable packaging material with a natural brown color. Classified as a mono-material, it offers a reliable grease barrier without compromising recyclability in the fibre stream.

Syntegon played a crucial role in developing the concept and machinery for erecting fibre trays just before packing the cookies. Billerud contributed its fully recyclable CrownBoard Craft, known for its high quality, strength, and lightweight properties.

Walki, leveraging its expertise in barrier performance, introduced two material combinations based on kraft board. German Spiegel Verpackungen supported the project with printing and die-cutting.

The Folded Fibre Tray provides mechanical protection to minimize cracking and breakage during transportation. Additionally, its optional white exterior surface serves as an excellent print surface, enhancing the visual appeal of the packaging. Unveiled at Interpack 2023, this innovative solution combines sustainability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal in cookie packaging.
