BASF Launches World’s First Biomass-Balanced Polyethersulfone: Ultrason® E 2010 BMB

In a groundbreaking step toward sustainable high-performance materials, BASF has introduced the world’s first biomass-balanced polyethersulfone (PESU)—Ultrason® E 2010 BMB. This innovative material helps replace fossil resources, cut greenhouse gas emissions, and boost the use of renewable feedstocks—all without compromising on performance, quality, or production compatibility.

Ultrason® E 2010 BMB empowers industries ranging from household and catering to automotive, electronics, healthcare, and water systems to elevate their products’ sustainability while maintaining the material advantages of conventional PESU.

Renewable Feedstock Meets High Performance

BASF replaces fossil raw materials at the very beginning of the production process with renewable feedstock derived from organic waste. Using a mass balance approach certified under ISCC PLUS, the renewable portion is attributed to the Ultrason® material. This approach, combined with 100% green electricity, enables BASF to significantly reduce the product carbon footprint (PCF) of Ultrason® E 2010 BMB compared to its standard counterpart.

“We’re proud to be the first company to offer a biomass-balanced PESU,” said Erik Gubbels, Global Business Development, Ultrason®, BASF. “With this addition to the Ultrason® portfolio, we’re enabling our customers to take an early and effective step in their green transformation toward circular, climate-friendly solutions.”

Currently, 50% of the fossil raw materials in the production of Ultrason® E 2010 are replaced with ISCC PLUS-certified bio-circular feedstocks, resulting in 39% attribution of renewable content in the final product.

A Seamless, Drop-In Solution for Sustainability

BASF designed Ultrason® E 2010 BMB as a drop-in replacement for its standard PESU. Customers can use the biomass-balanced version without requalifying their applications or altering existing injection molding or extrusion processes. It meets the same rigorous quality and safety certifications, including those for food and water contact.

From reusable baby bottles and microwave-safe kitchenware to automotive fuel system parts, medical devices, and electronics, this material performs flawlessly—while drastically reducing its environmental impact.

Verified Transparency and PCF Insights

To ensure transparency and accountability, BASF provides customers with product-specific PCF data, helping them assess the environmental footprint of their own products. A digital tool developed by BASF calculates cradle-to-gate PCFs, which include emissions from raw material sourcing to final production.

The third-party certification ensures that every ton of Ultrason® E 2010 BMB sold includes the correct amount of renewable feedstock, replacing fossil inputs in a proven and traceable manner.
