Adopting UN Environment Programme’s Principles
Under the program, HAVIT will integrate the UN Environment Programme’s Redesign-Reduce-Recycle principles into its packaging structure and volume optimization. The company’s strategy includes the use of 100% recyclable FSC-certified materials for product packaging. The initiative also involves a significant reduction in plastic usage, with the company aiming to cut down its plastic use by at least 80%. This will be achieved by replacing inner trays and hooks with paper cards.

Key amendments adopted by the European Parliament include deletion of proposed single-use bans in the HORECA sector and removal of re-use targets for take-away food and drinks. 

Bio Plast Pom, based in Poland, says NOPLA is not a synthetic material. It is reportedly free of both artificial ingredients and plastics and is not thought to leave behind microplastics when it decomposes.

Apparently, the patent-protected material is biodegradable and compostable in a household composter, salt water, freshwater, and soil. It is designed to comply with the EN 13432 composting standards and claims to degrade in 3 to 6 months under household composting conditions.

The government has directed sugar mills to ensure compliance with the mandatory packaging of 20 per cent of production in jute bags from the coming sugar season. The sugar season in the country begins in October. 

Sugar mills are being reviewed at the highest government level and are directed to take appropriate action prior to the onset of the sugar season 2023-24, according to an official statement, dated August 11. 

A team led by Rafael Auras has made a bio-based polymer blend that's compostable in both home and industrial settings. The work is published in the journal ACS Sustainable Chemistry & Engineering.

"In the U.S. and globally, there is a large issue with waste and especially plastic waste," said Auras, MSU professor and the Amcor Endowed Chair in Packaging Sustainability.

Less than 10% of plastic waste is recycled in the U.S. That means the bulk of plastic waste ends up as trash or litter, creating economic, environmental and even health concerns.
