Along with the surge in global voicing of concerns regarding sustainability comes “greenwashing” – an attempt made by corporations and brands to exploit such sentiment and mislead consumers into buying and using more expensive products that are no better for the environment.

In the short timeline of the last five years, there has been a 71% rise in online searches for sustainable goods globally, as reported by The Economist Intelligence Unit.

“These lids help optimize our packaging and eliminate the use of small plastics, just one example of the many solutions we’re reviewing as part of our ongoing global commitment to reduce waste,” a McDonald’s spokesperson said in a statement.

The plastic lids have a pullback tab to prevent the drink from splashing out. To drink from it, customers have to pull the tab back and slot it into a small opening. It’s similar to the “sippy cup” lid at Starbucks that has been in use for the past three years.

A start-up packaging company in Melbourne has joined a growing global effort to divert organic waste from landfill and is the first in Australia to do it using fungi.

Camden Cooke and Amanda Morgan first launched Fungi Solutions in 2020 with hopes to reduce waste.

Almost three years later, they have stopped about 900 kilograms of waste from heading to landfill and prevented thousands of tonnes of carbon pollution.

They combine fungi with organic waste to grow and create compostable packaging.

Made from chemically recycled bio-based and plastic waste feedstock, respectively, Dow’s SURLYN™ ionomers are set to be used in the production of the plastics. Raw materials such as used cooking oil are expected to be used as bio-based feedstocks, with waste residues or by-products from alternative production processes thought to prevent the overconsumption of land resources and competition with the food chain.
