When you entered the Bathroom the only thing you saw was Plastic, there was a lot of it. Shampoos, conditioners, body washes, makeup, lotion—you name it. Though Kiyounf Sung(Founder of Remi) was a ten-year veteran of companies like P&G, Colgate Palmolive, and other beauty and personal care brands, it struck her at that moment how pervasive the plastic crisis is. What had become a necessary ritual was now a source of guilt. “It just made me really angry that we kind of let this happen,” she explains.

Development of de-inkable, recyclable* mono-material PE-pouch with barrier properties

 In a breakthrough development, a fully recyclable* mono-material PE pouch has been created that has similar properties to barely recyclable multi-material laminated pouches. The new pouches utilize the latest polymers, inks, functional coatings, adhesives and conversion technology and were the product of a unique value chain collaboration of ExxonMobil, Henkel, Kraus Folie, Siegwerk and Windmöller & Hölscher.

Mars Wrigley China Launches First Package Containing 100% rPET in a Local Chocolate Brand - Cui Xiang Mi

At Mars, they want to contribute to a circular economy where packaging material never becomes waste. Mars Wrigley China has taken a series of actions since 2019 to reimagine and redesign its packaging, making sure it is reusable, recyclable or compostable through innovation and advocacy. In 2023, Mars Wrigley China will make further progress in sustainable packaging innovation. We have launched our first package containing rPET in the Chinese market via a local chocolate brand, Cui Xiang Mi (CXM). The 216g canister lid of CXM is made from 100% rPET.

PolyREC launches RecoTrace, the multipolymer data collection system to record European recycled plastic data

PolyREC has now been recognized as an official data collector for the Circular Plastics Alliance (CPA). PolyREC will now report on the progress of the entire European plastics value chain towards the CPA target of 10 Mt recycled plastics use by 2025 using RecoTrace data.

PolyREC now calls on all plastic recyclers and converters to register their recycled plastic data into RecoTrace and, in doing so, ensure transparency of the circular movement of European polymers.

Following independent testing in accordance with the RecyClass Recyclability Evaluation Protocol, Neopac ‘Polyfoil® MMB 545/645’ tube is approved as fully compatible with the European rigid high density polyethylene (HDPE) recycling stream. This HDPE tube is paired with HDPE shoulders and cap, and ideal for cosmetic, dental and pharmaceutical applications.

With its new UniNATURE Water-Oil Barrier Coating, Siegwerk offers the first barrier solution with 100% natural content certified for application on paper plates. The water-based functional coating represents a sustainable alternative to replace restricted coatings on single-use paper plates according to the Single Use Plastics Directive (EU 2019/904) and enables their recycling through the existing paper recovery cycle.

Sainsbury’s first UK retailer to vacuum pack all beef mince saving 450 tonnes of plastic each year

  • Sainsbury’s has announced it is removing traditional plastic tray packaging across its entire beef mince range and replacing it with a vacuum-packed alternative
  • The packaging format, which uses a minimum of 55% less plastic, is the latest move in a series of initiatives from the retailer as it works towards its goal of halving its use of plastic packaging in Own Brand products by 2025

A supermarket-first, the new packaging will result in a minimum 55% reduction in plastic per product.

It’s the fastest-ever full biodegradation of biaxially oriented (flexible) polypropylene which is used in food and cosmetic packaging.

PulPac and PA Consulting announce Bottle Collective to minimize single-use plastic waste

The Bottle Collective is committed to industrializing a recyclable, high-speed, low-cost Dry Molded Fiber bottle process. This technology will be a viable alternative to single-use and commodity plastic bottles and applicable for multiple products and categories. PA’s mechanical-engineering, design, automation, and material-sciences teams, along with PulPac, have already developed the first functioning prototypes. Multiple leading brand partners have already joined the Collective to continue developing and scaling fiber bottles by 2025.
