Ineos, a global petrochemicals manufacturer headquartered in London, has produced an ultra-thin, rigid film for recyclable flexible packaging applications made from 50 percent recycled plastic.

Huhtamaki has developed mono-material flexible packaging in paper, PE and PP Retort.  

Dr Marco Hilty, president of flexible packaging at Huhtamaki, said: ‘What we’ve done, quite simply, is to redesign the future of flexible packaging by setting new industry standards in mono-material solutions.  These blueloop innovations are both unique to Huhtamaki and transformational. • Mondi partnered with mattress producer Megaflex Schaumstoff to introduce Protector Bag ExpandForm for mattress rollpacking
• Created from Mondi kraft paper, the new packaging is made from renewable materials and is easy to dispose of and recycle in existing paper waste streams
• The paper bag is customisable in size, and requires little adaption to existing packing equipment

Protector Bag ExpandForm replaces the current plastic packaging with a flexible and recyclable alternative.

According to a recent study by PWC-Assocham, by 2050 India would need a landfill as big as the size of its capital city, New Delhi, to manage its urban waste. In a bid to reduce waste going to landfills, Pernod Ricard India, a global leader in the wine and spirits industry, has taken an initiative remove permanent mono cartons from its packaging across all its product offerings. 

According to Tata Steel, the key to the success of its collaboration is a new product called Protact which, it is claimed, offers a unique internal polypropylene (PP) layer which enabled the groundbreaking direct seal concept. This concept, it is claimed, eliminates the need for a traditional can ring and delivers a 24% steel weight reduction overall.

By using this coating, Grupo Calvo was also able to use its innovative Vuelca Fácil® or ‘Easy Flip’ aluminium film lid which allows the can to be opened easily and safely.

In 2017, Jason Dibble founded Boomerang with the mission to address the critical issues of water access and sustainability. His experiences serving in the US Military, including four tours in Afghanistan, provided the impetus for his passion. While watching the delivery of bottled water in the hot desert sun, Dibble observed the negative environmental impact of single-use plastic bottles, including chemical leaching and toxic waste disposal in burn pits.

Laura Meehan has designed a 100% sustainable refillable cartridge made of cork, with the help of Lancaster University through its Low Carbon Eco-Innovatory (LCEI) programme.

Her startup, Let’s Rethink This, has developed a product called Nada, and is aiming to improve on current brands on the market which use metal and plastic.
