Addressing reporters here on Tuesday, T. Balakumar, president, chairman of Development Council for Pulp, Paper and Allied Industries said the used papers and boards were being recycled to the maximum possible extent of 85% in the developed nations while it was only 50% in India forcing the country to import 70 lakh tonnes of ‘waste paper’ and 1.50 lakh tonnes of paper pulp, the raw material from other countries for making papers and boards for packaging industry here.

Since traditional plastic liners in cereal boxes are not widely recyclable curbside, Kellogg Europe tested new paper liners in boxes of Corn Flakes® at select Tesco stores in 2022. The trial produced thousands of cartons without a single modification to Kellogg’s production equipment or Tesco’s in-store processes. 

The paper-based liners preserve the cereal’s freshness as effectively as its plastic counterpart and makes the entire cereal carton recyclable through more readily available methods.  

Essential to the project was the support of 4evergreen members, which over nine months carried out tests that informed the improvements of the method and the development of three technical annexes. 

The method is particularly relevant to the paper packaging industry. Many paper packaging options already enjoy high recycling rates but are also increasingly fulfilling new functionalities. These need to be considered by brand owners aiming to reach ever-higher performance in terms of circularity and sustainability for their products.
