Sainsbury’s is the first UK retailer to announce it is switching from plastic to paper packaging across its entire own-brand toilet paper and kitchen towel ranges. The move will save 485 tonnes of plastic, which is equivalent to over 55 million pieces of plastic a year. The change is the biggest plastics reduction the retailer has made in its grocery business so far.

“The partnership with Lantmännen Unibake and Adara opened the opportunity to unite our expertise across the food packaging value network to create a renewable and recyclable packaging solution for frozen bread. Lantmännen Unibake and a third-party food industry development company conducted thorough testing and analysis on the impact of packaging materials on the taste of the frozen bread; as a result UPM Asendo was chosen as the inner liner for the cardboard box.

Austria-based rigid and plastic packaging supplier Greiner Packaging has developed a sustainable packaging solution for Henkel’s new Somat Excellence 4in1 caps.

The cardboard-plastic tub uses 50% post-consumer recycled (PCR) polypropylene (PP) for the exterior coating sourced from end-consumer households. The tub’s interior is made of white virgin material.

The cardboard wrap features around 100% recycled material and can be easily separated from the plastic tub for recycling.

Absolut Vodka is embarking on a three-month test for its single-mould paper bottle – sold in British supermarket chain, Tesco – a significant milestone on its journey to create a 100 per cent bio-based bottle and reduce its CO2 emissions.

The paper bottle initiative is part of a wider collaboration with Paboco (the Paper Bottle Company) and their community of global brands, The Coca-Cola Company, Carlsberg, P&G and L’Oréal – to work collectively to help the drinks and packaging industries push the boundaries for sustainable packaging.
