PFAS are a diverse family of synthetic chemicals that are used in the manufacturing of every day products with anti-stain, water, grease, oil and/or dirt-repelling properties. These products include fast food containers, microwave popcorn bags, paper wrappers such as those for sandwiches and butter, and many others. The PFAS in Food Packaging Law, an update to the New York State Hazardous Packaging Act, will take effect on December 31, 2022. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will be testing for PFAS in food packaging beginning in 2023 in New York State.
