UPM and Fazer have co-created a fibre-based packaging solution which is being piloted for the Fazer Oat Rice Pies “Kaurainen Riisipiirakka”, a traditional snack eaten throughout Finland, with a rye – or in this case oat – crust and rice filling. 

The packaging solution aims to reduce the use of fossil-based materials and to improve recyclability. The package also safeguards the taste and food safety of the Fazer Oat Rice Pies until their best-before date.

Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, is bringing paper-packed dry rice to the UK for the first time, by collaborating with award-winning rice supplier Veetee.

Laser and specially formulated PE-films allow for controlled tearing. The pouch is constructed with a laminate of an MDO-PE film and a new developed LDPE- based film. The laser preformation in the centre of the side gusset fold of the bag is the starting point for the opening. By weakening the laminate in a controlled way, the material is thin enough to allow for a controlled opening of the pouch but still thick enough to protect the snacks inside.

He expressed concern over the use of newspapers for wrapping or packaging food and also pointed out significant health risks associated with this practice.

"The ink used in newspapers contains various bioactive materials with known negative health effects, which can contaminate food and lead to health issues when ingested," FSSAI cautioned on Wednesday.

Additionally, printing inks may contain chemicals, including lead and heavy metals, that can leach into the food, posing serious health risks over time, the regulator said.
