A Comprehensive Guide to Packaging Symbols

 Packaging symbols play a crucial role in ensuring proper handling, safety, and compliance with international regulations. Whether you're in the food industry, pharmaceuticals, or consumer goods, understanding these symbols can help you make informed decisions about packaging, storage, and disposal. In this guide, we'll break down the most common packaging symbols and their meanings.

 

1. Recycling Symbols ♻️

These symbols indicate whether a package is recyclable and how it should be disposed of.

Mobius Loop (♻️) - Indicates that the packaging is recyclable.

Plastic Resin Codes (♳♴♵♶♷♸♹) - Found inside the recycling triangle, these numbers (1-7) denote the type of plastic used.

  1. PET/PETE (Polyethylene Terephthalate): Used for most water and soda bottles.
  2. HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene): Found in milk jugs, detergent bottles.
  3. PVC/V (Polyvinyl Chloride): Used in food wrap, oil bottles, plumbing pipes.
  4. LDPE (Low-Density Polyethylene): Found in squeeze bottles, shopping bags.
  5. PP (Polypropylene): Used in yogurt containers, medicine bottles.
  6. PS (Polystyrene): Found in foam cups, packaging peanuts.
  7. Other (Miscellaneous plastics): Includes acrylic, nylon, polycarbonate.

Green Dot (🔄) - Common in Europe, it means the manufacturer contributes to recycling efforts.

2. Food Packaging Symbols 🍽️

These symbols are found on food packages to ensure safety and regulatory compliance.

Glass & Fork (🍽️) - Signifies that the packaging is safe for food contact.

Flammable (🔥) - Indicates that the contents can catch fire easily.
