In response to the growing demand for recyclable and sustainable packaging, Royal Vaassen, in collaboration with UPM Specialty Papers, has introduced a new line of fibre-based, food-safe barrier paper solutions designed to replace traditional plastic and aluminum laminates.

At the heart of this innovation is the Barryrwrap concept, a portfolio of recyclable papers that meet barrier needs from medium to highly demanding applications, including strong protection against oxygen and moisture. With the EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) deadlines approaching, these solutions arrive at the right time fully compatible with widely established paper and board recycling systems.

“Our barrier papers are a true sustainable alternative to laminates and plastics. They combine protection, performance, and circularity, while running seamlessly on existing production lines for products like coffee, stock, and chocolate,” said Mark Gerritsen, Sales Manager, Royal Vaassen.

One of the highlights, Barryrwrap Everest, is engineered for maximum protection in challenging applications such as instant coffee and other dry goods. The material provides outstanding resistance to moisture, oxygen, and light, delivers exceptional print quality, and is designed to seal efficiently on existing lines all while being fully recyclable.

The solutions are built on UPM Solide™ Lucent, a premium packaging paper known for its smoothness, density, and strength. Available in varying grammages, it ensures reliable performance on high-speed packaging lines while minimizing the amount of coating required.

Testing has already expanded Barryrwrap’s use to new formats such as fibre-based canisters for chips and drink powders. Visitors to Fachpack 2025 in Nuremberg will be able to see sample canisters and learn more about the innovation at UPM Specialty Papers’ Stand 329, Hall 3A.

Safe for food contact, compliant with recyclability regulations, and designed to reduce reliance on plastics and aluminum, Barryrwrap and UPM Solide Lucent represent the next step toward a more circular packaging future.
