What It Is & Where It's Used

Two Formats, One Goal: Cost per Unit at Volume

Centre-seal (fin-seal) pouches are formed on a form-fill-seal machine as a continuous pillow pack, with a single back seam running down the centre — the same principle as a flow-wrap. 3-side seal pouches are pre-made flat pouches, sealed on the left, right, and bottom, with the top left open for filling and final sealing on your line. Both formats use less film per unit than gusseted or stand-up pouches, which is why they dominate high-volume, cost-sensitive categories.

Centre-seal is the standard for sugar, salt, spices, biscuits, wafers, and other commodity products running on continuous horizontal or vertical FFS lines. 3-side seal pouches are preferred where dosing precision matters — single-serve sachets for pharma, cosmetics, sauces, ketchup, and condiment portions — because the pouch arrives pre-formed and only needs a top seal after filling.

Both formats can be run as single- or multi-layer laminates depending on barrier need, and centre-seal in particular is commonly specified in perforated strips for multi-sachet retail packs.

Typical Buyers

  • Sugar, salt & commodity food packers
  • Biscuit & wafer manufacturers
  • Pharma & cosmetic single-serve sachet brands
  • Sauce, ketchup & condiment producers
Why It Performs

Built for Speed and Cost Discipline

At high volume, small inefficiencies in film cost or line speed compound fast — this is where format choice pays off.

Barrier Performance
Barrier level is matched to shelf-life need rather than over-specified — commodity products get cost-efficient films, sensitive products get metallized or foil layers.
Print Quality
Continuous repeat print for centre-seal strips and full-panel print for 3-side seal, both in rotogravure up to 8-9 colours.
Durability
Sealant layers are chosen for a wide, forgiving heat-seal window so seal strength stays consistent even at high FFS line speeds.
Flexible MOQ
Lower film cost per unit means centre-seal and 3-side seal runs often carry a lower entry MOQ than stand-up or zipper formats.
Customisation
Pack length, width, tear-notch position, and perforation spacing for multi-sachet strips are set to your filling line and pack format.
Quality Systems
Seal-strength and leak testing run at the film-structure level before bulk production, critical for liquid and semi-liquid sachet fills.
Technical Support
Our team reviews your FFS machine speed and product viscosity before recommending sealant layer and film gauge.
Supply Reliability
High-volume commodity runs are backed by extrusion and printing capacity across our West-North-South plant network.
Specification Options

Formats, Materials & Finishes

Chosen against fill speed, product form (solid, powder, liquid), and target cost per unit.

Format Options

Two core structures, plus common variants.

  • Centre-seal (fin-seal) pillow pouch for continuous FFS lines
  • 3-side seal pre-made pouch, open-top for filling
  • Gusseted centre-seal for higher fill volumes
  • Perforated multi-sachet strip for retail multi-packs

Material Options

Layer count scaled to barrier need and cost target.

  • Single-layer or two-layer laminate for commodity, cost-sensitive products
  • Three-layer laminate with metallized barrier for extended shelf life
  • High-speed sealant layers (LDPE / mLLDPE) for consistent seal at fast cycle times
  • Liquid-compatible sealant grades for sauces, ketchup, and semi-liquid fills

Finish Options

Finish kept simple where cost per unit is the primary driver.

  • Matte or gloss lamination
  • Reverse print for direct contact-safe inner surface
  • Easy-tear notches at regular intervals on strip packs
  • Spot varnish for brand-critical panels only, to control cost

Customisation Choices

Dimensioned against your FFS machine and fill weight.

  • Pack length and width to fill volume and machine former size
  • Tear-notch and perforation placement for strip packs
  • Print repeat length matched to pack length
  • Batch coding and date-stamp zone placement
Why Packaging Connections

Cost Discipline Without Cutting Seal Reliability

At high volume, a 2% seal-failure rate is a real cost line — our film and sealant selection is built to keep that number down.

Applications & Challenges Solved

Where Format Choice Drives the Cost Line

Each application has a different tolerance for seal failure and a different pressure on material cost.

Sugar, Salt & Commodity Staples
Challenge: material cost per unit at very high volumes
Single or two-layer centre-seal laminates minimise film usage while holding seal strength at continuous FFS line speeds.

Biscuits & Wafers
Challenge: crush and crumb protection on a flow-wrap line
Stiffness and seal-strength are balanced so the pack survives flow-wrap handling without bursting or crushing the product.

Single-Serve Sachets (Pharma, Sauce, Cosmetic)
Challenge: leak-proof seal on small, liquid or semi-liquid fills
Liquid-compatible sealant layers and tight seal-margin control on 3-side seal pouches prevent leakage on small-format doses.
Ordering Basics
MOQ
From 300 kg (film) / 20,000 pcs (3-side)
Lower entry than gusseted or stand-up formats due to reduced material usage per unit.
Lead Time
2-3 weeks ex-plant
From artwork and cylinder approval; strip-pack perforation specs are confirmed alongside the dieline.
Artwork
Continuous repeat print file (AI/PDF)
Repeat length is set to your pack size so print registration stays consistent along the roll.
Sampling
Trial reel / trial pouch batch
A short trial run on your FFS line confirms seal quality and line speed compatibility before full production.
FAQs

Common Questions

What's the difference between centre-seal and 3-side seal pouches?
Centre-seal is formed continuously on a form-fill-seal machine with a single back seam, used for high-speed solid or powder fills. 3-side seal is a pre-made flat pouch sealed on three sides, filled through the open top, and commonly used for liquid or semi-liquid single-serve doses.
Which format is better for liquid sachets?
3-side seal pouches with a liquid-compatible sealant layer are the standard choice for sauces, ketchup, and other semi-liquid single-serve sachets, since the pre-formed pouch gives tighter control over the final top seal after filling.
Can these run on our existing FFS machine?
In most cases yes — share your machine's web width, sealing jaw dimensions, and line speed, and we'll confirm film gauge and sealant compatibility before quoting.
What's the minimum order quantity?
Centre-seal film orders typically start around 300 kg per structure; 3-side seal pre-made pouches start around 20,000 pieces per SKU. Exact minimums depend on film structure and pouch size.
