West London materials innovation startup Aeropowder has secured a £150,000 investment from British Design Fund.

The company is launching thermal packaging made from surplus feathers as a sustainable alternative to single-use plastics and other harmful materials. The packaging is designed for use in the life sciences industry and cold chain logistics.

Production of the packaging, made from Balance®, a product supplied by Versalis, makes it possible to create a recycled film for food contact, while maintaining the technical performance and health properties that are essential for packaging intended for food use.

The recently concluded Packaging Design Awards recognized the ingenuity of young students in sustainable and industry-standard pasalubong (souvenir) packaging designs for diverse Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) from different regions in the Philippines.

Co-presented by Fedrigoni Asia Ltd. and Prestige Quality Paper Products, producers of premium eco-friendly specialty paper for publishing, arts, and packaging, the initiative was organized by the Industrial Design Program of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB).

Aberdeenshire-based Mackie’s of Scotland, best known for producing Scotland’s best-selling ice cream, has commissioned a new ice packaging machine capable of filling 30 bags of ice per minute.

The machine bags the ice, combines six bags of ice into a carry-bag for transport, then stacks the carry bags onto a pallet – with the robotic stacking arm learning as it goes to find the most efficient means of building the pallets.
