The new non-pollutive biomaterials are designed to replace conventional fossil-based plastic coatings used in grease-resistant fast-food packaging.

Grease-resistant paper is typically coated with plastic and other environmentally harmful chemicals, such as polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs), but the new prototype coating meets the functional requirements of conventional grease-resistant packaging materials while also presenting an environmentally circular solution.

Since traditional plastic liners in cereal boxes are not widely recyclable curbside, Kellogg Europe tested new paper liners in boxes of Corn Flakes® at select Tesco stores in 2022. The trial produced thousands of cartons without a single modification to Kellogg’s production equipment or Tesco’s in-store processes.

The paper-based liners preserve the cereal’s freshness as effectively as its plastic counterpart and makes the entire cereal carton recyclable through more readily available methods.

Consumers are increasingly frowning upon being served their favorite street foods or fast foods in polystyrene or plastic based boxes and wrappings. Paper-based packaging can offer a much more sustainable alternative if they are not lined with a plastic film which can make them unsuitable for recycling and composting. The solution is to carefully select paper coatings and barriers solutions which are fit for purpose and that are designed to make food packaging both safe for food contact and more recyclable.
