Mondi, a global leader in sustainable packaging and paper, has collaborated with Swiss converter ATS-Tanner to create an innovative paper band, which can hold individually labeled products or bundles reducing unnecessary plastic.

According to Tata Steel, the key to the success of its collaboration is a new product called Protact which, it is claimed, offers a unique internal polypropylene (PP) layer which enabled the groundbreaking direct seal concept. This concept, it is claimed, eliminates the need for a traditional can ring and delivers a 24% steel weight reduction overall.

By using this coating, Grupo Calvo was also able to use its innovative Vuelca Fácil® or ‘Easy Flip’ aluminium film lid which allows the can to be opened easily and safely.

Resembling an oversized purple Trivial Pursuit pie with all the pie pieces completed, the new Nerds Twist & Mix container is said to be a “first-of-its-kind design for the candy industry.” That’s according to Judy Lee, senior manager, Industrial Design for Nerds brand owner Ferrara USA. Lee was part of the team responsible for the new twist on a classic package: a multi-compartment plastic pack that lets consumers mix and match up to five Original Nerds flavors.

It's rare to see a new kind of material used for packaging, but it's even rarer when that material is highly sustainable and centuries old. 

The breakthrough new, yet old packaging that mimics ancient terracotta containers in India is coming to the US. And it brings a decidedly modern twist: the packaging can be made on-demand using 21st century technology.
