Amcor, a global leader in developing and producing responsible packaging solutions, has announced the expansion of its AmFiber™ Performance Paper packaging range in Europe to include heat seal sachets for dry culinary and beverage applications, such as instant coffee, drink powders, spices, seasonings, and dried soups.

Amcor Eco-Tite R, launched in the European market, is designed to maximise shelf-life, maintain food safety, reduce food waste, and it can be recycled in polyethylene plastic recycling streams where they exist.

Amcor Eco-Tite R is a multi-layer, mono-PE packaging that maintains a high barrier ot oxygen and water vapour, even when exposed to high-moisture environments such as cooler cases and refrigerators. The company said the new shrink bag provides an alternative to PVDC packaging, which is not recyclable in mechanical or chemical recycling systems.

The company is a spin-out company from Trinity College, Dublin and is on a mission to help halve food waste by 2030 on fresh packaged foods. The technology at its core is a novel packaging sensor that can measure the atmosphere surrounding the food in fresh food packs. The sensor can indicate the condition of the food in real time and help to avoid good food being thrown away, according to the company.

Greiner Packaging has already been testing various recycled materials for some time to determine their suitability for the production of its cardboard-plastic combinations. Now, the company has selected certified circular polypropylene from SABIC’s TRUCIRCLETM portfolio to realize a test project for Unilever. SABIC’s material uses post-consumer mixed plastic as feedstock which is broken down into its molecular building blocks, to create virgin plastics which are then used to produce these new recyclable tubs and lids.

The cups, which come under the firm’s EnviroWare brand, are made from FSC-certified bamboo fibre – with a water-based lining – and are certified commercially compostable.

“Ever since we created the EnviroWare brand over 14 years ago, it has been our mission to seek out more sustainable packaging solutions, and these are our most sustainable hot drink cups yet,” said MD Nick Burton.
