Everything about OPP or BOPP films for packaging

BOPP.jpg

OPP films are an important part of packaging.  These are also known as BOPP films in many countries specially in India and some Asian countries while US, Europe refers them mainly OPP films. These are highly transparent films and popularly used for overwrapping but over the years, there have been many developments in OPP films. Now one can get metallized OPP films, heatsealable OPP films, barrier OPP films, coated OPP films and so on.  The worldwide consumption of OPP films for packaging is more than 5500 thousand tonnes. So its important that we know much more about this packaging material.Through this column, we would now start from the basics of OPP films to the final applications, the latest developments. If you readers have anything to share, just leve your comments for everybody to see, upload your presentations, technical literature etc. It would be a great help to packaging community.

In OPP printing dot gain

In OPP printing dot gain happens as 75% dot becomes 100%.  1.    All line work (text) should be in single color / special color.   2.    Font size should be minimum 7 point : Please avoid using serif fonts in smaller point size   3.    Bar code should be positioned vertically.   4.    please expand your artwork horizontally depending on the wrapping over the substrate so that pix should not be looks distorted.   5.    The line thickness : .75 point : due to limitation of gravure printing & ink spilling   6.    All spot colors should be in single channel and preferrably with pantone no.

Dear SirComing to the use of

Dear SirComing to the use of PET and BOPP first we will see the area of application of the Film .There are various reasons which contribute to high use of BOPP / OPP films as compared to PET films worldwide. Some of the reasons are as follows:-1. Wide range of application of BOPP gives an edge over PET. ( E.g Biscuits, chocolates, Staples, Adhesive tape once of the largest application of the same. ) where as PET finds application in Bottles and Pouch . If you see the Frozen food like parantha or Roti, there are wrapped in BOPP films.2. Low cost as compared to PET, same time you can say in terms of Yield as well as film price.3. Growing Demand of pearlized Films worldwide finding a great application.4. Now since it is giving clarity also like Clarified Polypropylene film. And since BOPP is generally used with BOPP only. so it does not cause problem in recycling stream.Whereas if you take PET, apart from Pet bottles if it is laminated with PE then it cause problem in Recyclability stream. In India i think high use of PET is in PET bottles and pouches as yet we have not shifted to alternate source, this might be a reason. Now Pl. have your say on this to take the discussion forward.RgdsBadal

Dear friends , Price being

Dear friends , Price being the important consideration while purchasing a product ...so if we compare 18µ Plain BOPP price  VS 12µ Plain PET price there is a diffrence of  Rs 50/kg & per sqm price workouts to be  Rs 0.9 & their is yield advantage in BOPP also ..........If BOPP has such a price advantage ,then why Market doesnot shift from PET to BOPP ???

 Dear friend,Price and

Dear friend,Price and yield advantage is there in BOPP as compared to PET.But at the same time we cannot use BOPP for every application. You cannot use BOPP for pouching. Where high temperature and toughness application is required, we have to rely on PET. Making plastic Bottle is one of the best example, where PET is used due to its recylable nature as it turns into ash during recyclinng and making it environment friendly material compared to BOPP. So complete shift is ruled out. We are coming with high performance PP application. But then also there is miles to go before we shift to BOPP in a larger way. Moreover wherever Oxygen barrier is required, pouching is required , PET is preffered over BOPP. so every material due to its unique property of theirs will continue to maintain their existence and same time other material will try to outscore the other. RegardsBadal

While we are discussing

While we are discussing about it, I would like to discuss first what exactly BOPP or OPP is? Can anyone please explain it better from packaging point of view? thank you, Sandeep Goyal

Dear Sir,As desired I am

Dear Sir,As desired I am attaching herewith a presentation on BOPP / OPP.Regards,Sanjeev Yadav.

Dear Sanjiv, presentation is

Dear Sanjiv, presentation is missing. can you please attach it again, and also write briefly about BOPP in comments,  thank you, Sandeep Goyal

Dear All,Please find below

Dear All,Please find below general information regarding BOPP films, a small presentation also attached herewith.General Information:Bopp films are bi-axially oriented polypropylene films designed for flexible packaging and label applications. Opp, oriented polypropylene, is a flexible material derived from melting and orienting a polymer called polypropylene. This raw material, an oil by-product, is inert and unaffected by most chemical agents occurring in daily life. Biaxially oriented means that the polypropylene film is stretched in both the machine direction and across machine direction. Bopp Films FeaturesThe main feature of Bopp films are improved stiffness, high tensile strength, excellent optics and good water barrier properties. They range from 15 to 50 microns and are most commonly 15 to 30 microns. These bopp packaging films can be monolayer or coextuded structures, and transparent, opaque, or metallized. They also have the advantage of being non-toxic and fully recyclable. Bopp films are printed out of new printing technology, Indigo Omnius. They provide excellent UV light protection, humidity, aroma and light barriers. Bopp films have superior strength at low gauges, flatness, clarity and excellent printability. They can be treated with acrylic and PVDC PVDC coatings for better sealability and barrier properties. The Bopp films use mainly homopolymer PP and random copolymer PP.Applications: BOPP Films and Packaging

  • Bopp films are ideal for twist-wrap applications and in laminations for use on vertical and horizontal machines.
  • Bopp films also be used for decorative purposes.
  • They are used in an a almost limitless array of flexible packaging applications, pressure sensitive tapes, labels, stationery, metallizing, consumer products and a wide variety of packaging uses.
  • Bopp packaging films are widely used for gift and flower wrapping, paper lamination, textile packaging, release film for melamine plates and plate film packaging.
  • These films are also used as the anti-counterfeit covering film on the packaging cases.
  • Various packaging products like packaging pouches, packaging bags, electronic packaging, industrial packaging are produced by Bopp films.

Features of BOPP film:- Excellent clarity- Good dimensional stability and flatness- Low electrostatic charge- Good barrier to water vapor- High gloss- Good performance on high speed printing- Resistant to oils and greases- Good puncture and flex-crack resistance over a wide range of temperatures- Not affected by moisture and does not wrinkle or shrink with environmental changes- Recyclable Regards,Sanjeev Yadav.
