Mr. Rajesh Kumar Mishra
Chief Manager - Packaging Development,
Nicholas Piramal India Limited
“Focusing on the Packaging Drug Delivery Devices which I feel is the future of pharma packaging apart from the other development areas”
Packaging Connections:What is your educational background? How did you get involved in the Packaging industry?
Mr. Rajesh:I am a Science Graduate with P. G. Diploma in "Packaging Technology" from Indian Institute of Packaging, Mumbai. After graduation with a very limited understanding on the scope of packaging profession in India I had opted for the packaging PG diploma course and then slowly learn the technology and hence got involved in Packaging.
Packaging Connections:Your key activities at work? What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Mr. Rajesh:My key activities in the current assignment are to deliver packaging development support to the domestic as well as international business of Piramal Healthcare Ltd. As the packaging requirement
for the domestic and international markets are different, therefore fulfilling these requirements with different approach is the most rewarding and challenging part of my profession.
Packaging Connections:What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
Mr. Rajesh: Product Development Projects in Pharma companies are always time bonded - it is more so for the international business than domestic. On the other hand our packaging development activities purely depend on the supplier commitment on timelines. But more often suppliers failed to keep the commitment on time which is the biggest headache to be dealt with in every project.
Packaging Connections: Your key achievements?
Mr. Rajesh:Derived proper regulatory requirements on packaging for different pharmaceutical dosage forms for variuos regulatory filling of drug products and integrated development of drug delivery devices with packaging development in order to deliver maximum support to the drug development process.
Packaging Connections:What is one thing about the industry that you would change?
Mr. Rajesh:Packaging Industries in India are currently towards more production oriented with very little or less focussed on the Innovations except few companies. I would like them to be more INNOVATIVE not only in their product design but also in their process as well as logistics - I believe for them A LONG WAY TO GO
Packaging Connections:What are your views on the status of the packaging industry in India? What is the way forward?
Mr. Rajesh: I believe their is enough potential in Packaging Industries in India - still there are many segment of packaging where Pharma companies have no option but to depend on the Imported source.
Packaging Connections:Could you share with us your key plans for the future?
Mr. Rajesh: I am now focusing on the Packaging Drug Delivery Devices which I feel is the future of pharma packaging apart from the other development areas.
Packaging Connections:What has been your biggest challenge? How did you overcome?
Mr. Rajesh:My biggest challenge in the past was to manage quite a lot of International projects simultaneously which were required proper regulatory know how - which was done by simultaneous learning and proper planning to complete with minimum error as one error even in packaging will cost a lot to the company.
Packaging Connections: What are three important tenets that you work by when beginning a new packaging project?
Mr. Rajesh:Three important tenets are : Innovations - with a proper understanding about the requirement, Planning - to set target with timelimes of project & Execution - achievements against planning
Packaging Connections:Your packaging dream?
Mr. Rajesh:My packaging dream is to provide a proper approach and system to the Industry where packaging will be considered as important as the product for success of any.business.
