Mr. S.V Divgi
Vice President – Operations, Ferromatik Milacron India

“Government should support the machine building industry by providing better infrastructure and policies as the machine building industry is the engine of growth for any growing economy"

Packaging Connections: What is your educational background? How did you get involved in the Packaging industry? Mr. Divgi:B. E – Electrical. Started my career with the Plastics Industry in 1986 and as it is a good place for constant learning, I continued with this industry.

Packaging Connections:    What inspired you to become part of Plastindia 2009?
Mr. Divgi:I have participated in all PlastIndia exhibitions since last 23 years and have observed the industry growing rapidly not only in size but also in the technological front. I trust & believe the PLASTINDIA09 punch line “The Future is here”. PlastIndia NEC Chairman Shri Mahendrabhai Patel inspired me to take part in this exhibition by leading the “Energy Conservation” theme and I thank him for giving this opportunity.

Packaging Connections: Your key activities at work? What is the most rewarding part of your work?
Mr. Divgi:Produce consistent quality products with optimum cost and bare minimum inventory, being flexible in manufacturing as per the changing market needs and to run business profitably, earning customer delight. The rewarding part is being able to find better solutions for our customers through innovation and newer technologies.

Packaging Connections:What unexpected costs and headaches have you had to deal with?
Mr. Divgi:We at Ferromatik Milacron India Ltd. serve the industry by producing top of the class Injection moulding machines with a wide range of products for variety of application segments. As the market needs change suddenly and with the shorter lifespan of the end products, unexpected deviation from the set-plan always costs us and creates opportunities to deal with tough situations. Coupled with this we have to deal with unforeseen challenges such as upheavals in economy, steel prices, government polices, inhuman acts such as terrorism etc.

Packaging Connections:  Your key achievements?
Mr. Divgi:I have been in the industry for the 23 years contributing my best in Design, Production and Operational areas. I have lead the “Kaizen” and “Lean” efforts in the organization and had been the Executive Champion for global ERP system implementation.  Recently I also had an opportunity to lead the domestic sales team which gave me an excellent opportunity to look at the business from outside in. However, my cherishable achievement is that our growth in customer base and sales increased rapidly and we became number one in the Plastic Injection Moulding machinery market in India. This also gave me an opportunity to interact with all the industry experts and processors which helped me to increase my knowledge. I am proud to have led the dedicated sales and service team and contributing towards customer delight.

Packaging Connections: What is one thing about the industry that you would change?
Mr. Divgi:The change, especially in plastic industry, is inevitable. Hence, I won’t aim to change any thing there, instead be supportive to this change by increasing our current manufacturing capacity of 700 machines per year to 1000 machines per year by 2011.

Packaging Connections: What are your views on the status of the packaging industry in India? What is the way forward?
Mr. Divgi:The industry still lacks a befitting infrastructure at many phases. Machinery mfrs, mold makers, auxiliary suppliers and the processors should have a common forum to work towards the betterment of the plastic industry as a whole. Government should support the machine building industry by providing better infrastructure and policies as the machine building industry is the engine of growth for any growing economy. We also need to have a better facility of international standards for such a large and prestigious exhibition to attract more international participants.

Packaging Connections: Could you share with us your key plans for the future?
Mr. Divgi:We are in the business of providing products & services to increase the productivity of processors by offering appropriate technology so as to generate economic value for customers and stakeholders. This has been our guiding principle in conducting our business. Our business strategy has been to deliver competitive advantage to our customers through our products and services.

Packaging Connections: What has been your biggest challenge? How did you overcome?
Mr. Divgi:. Establishing manufacturing operations to produce world class products by JIT line under cellular manufacturing concept, control inventory and sell the machines against all the odds in the market.  We overcome these by precise planning and excellent team working.

Packaging Connections: Your packaging dream?
Mr. Divgi: Clean and Green India with a per capita plastic consumption above world’s maximum.
